Newsbrief: 25th Annual Asian Community Night with the Oakland Athletics, A Huge Win for Mental Health
Oakland, CA - August 7, 2007 - Asian Community Mental Health Services and the Oakland A’s joined together for the 25th Annual Asian Community Night with the A’s on Friday, August 3, 2007. The A’s proved that they are the winning team – not only beating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 8-4, but also donating $9,000 for much-needed social and mental health care services for the Asian and Pacific Islander communities.
"Stigma against mental health in mainstream and ethnic communities prevent many from seeking treatment, causing their symptoms to worsen and reach a critical state,” said John K. Fong, Interim Executive Director at Asian Community Mental Health Services. “Our annual Asian Community Night with the A’s allows us to reach tens of thousands of people, letting them know they are not alone in their struggle, and that help is available.”
Over 600 Asian Community Mental Health Services staff, board members, clients and supporters joined together to celebrate Asian Community Night. The media sponsors for the event were: AsianWeek, Bayspo Newspaper, Filipinas Magazine, Hokubei Mainichi Newspaper, Hills Newspapers, Hyphen Magazine, The Korea Times, KTSF26, Nichi Bei Times, Philippine News, and Sing Tao Daily.
