For 34 years, Asian Community Mental Health Services challenged social stigmas against behavioral and developmental disabilities, and filled a void in services for underserved Asian and Pacific Islanders in the East Bay. At ACMHS’ May 1st 34th Anniversary Gala:To the Beat of Our Own Drum, the agency celebrates its groundbreaking work and honors community partners who help promote hope, personal empowerment, respect, social connections, and self-determination among those with mental illness or developmental disabilities.
The recipients of the 2008 ACMHS awards are:
Visionary Award – Stephen W. Mayberg, Ph.D., Director, California Department of Mental Health: For his courageous leadership in advancing policy and advocacy in the field of mental health.
Media Champion Award – Asian American Journalists Association: For the group’s role in challenging misinformation and stereotypes in media coverage around the Virginia Tech tragedy and presenting mental distress as a human and commonplace experience.
Neighborhood Advocate Award – Sung Ae Chun, Music Director, Joyful Ringers: For her work in inspiring developmentally disabled youth in the East Bay community through music.
Philanthropic Leader Award – Benjamin Keh: For his stewardship and devotion to improving services for those with mental illness.
To the Beat of Our Own Drum will raise awareness and critical funds for culturally competent mental health, developmental disabilities, family support, and youth empowerment programs dedicated to low-income Asians and Pacific Islanders. The event is hosted by Emmy-award winning, NBC11 Meteorologist Rob Mayeda, with performances by Japanese drumming group O Nami Taiko and Joyful Ringers.
