Newsbrief: ACMHS Receives Civic Contribution Award from League of Women Voters of Oakland

Oakland, CA-- On April 19, 2006, at their 15th Annual All-City Luncheon, the League of Women Voters of Oakland honored Asian Community Mental Health Services with the Civic Contribution Award. Each year the League of Women Voters of Oakland honors those who have contributed significantly to the City of Oakland and its residents. Asian Community Mental Health Services was recognized for the work they have done to make Oakland a healthy city. Interim Executive Director, John Fong, Operations Director, Sharron Sue, and Board member, Darlene Kelly, accepted the award. Also awarded recognition was Highland Hospital Trauma Center.

For 32 years, Asian Community Mental Health Services has enhanced the quality of care and improved access for Oakland's underserved Asians and Pacific Islanders. Its clients include immigrant and refugee families in need of mental health, substance abuse, and developmental disabilities services. With fluency in 13 languages, its staff of nearly 100 includes multi-cultural, multi-lingual, multi-disciplinary paraprofessionals, marriage and family therapists, licensed clinical social workers, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists. ACMHS promotes concepts key to recovery for individuals who have mental illness: hope, personal empowerment, respect, social connections, self-responsibility, and self-determination. Its practices reflect the cultural, ethnic, and language diversity of Asian communities and their histories.
